If you know someone who wants to self-advocate, or are yourself someone interested in advocacy, here’s some news for you.

The NYS Council on Developmental Disabilities (CDD), along with the New York Alliance for Inclusion & Innovation and The Arc New York, has announced its second annual Advocacy Institute, taking place this September. This event is free.

Participants will hear from several speakers on a variety of topics, and be provided with interactive activities to practice advocacy skills in small groups. The goal of this training is for participants to learn strategies to improve their advocacy skills and gain confidence about advocating for their needs and interests.

Who Should Apply

Self-advocates who:

  • Are new to advocacy and want to gain more skills
  • Live in different regions of the state
  • have diverse backgrounds

Topics 

  • Public speaking and how to tell your story
  • Finding the right type of advocacy
  • Disability issues and making systemic change
  • Advocating with all types of decision makers
  • Tips for an effective meeting
